Goodyear board member Joe Pizzillo will complete the tenure as mayor of Georgia Lord, who died at the house on December 12.

Residents can apply for a vacant council seat

The move leaves a vacant board position to fill. Goodyear residents interested in taking the Pizzillo board seat can apply starting December 22. Details will be posted on or after that date on the city’s website at

The board has 60 days from Pizzillo’s appointment to fill the vacant board seat, said city manager Julie Karins. The nominee is expected to run for office in 2022 to retain the board seat.

Pizzillo becomes mayor for the second time

Pizzillo was first elected to council in 2009 and served as interim mayor from 2010 to 2011 after then-mayor Jim Cavanaugh resigned. After Goodyear voters elected Lord Mayor, Pizzillo returned to his seat on the council, to which he was re-elected in 2013 and 2017.

Pizzillo will be mayor until 2022, although he plans to run for office in the coming year.
