Fresno State Hands No. 21 San Diego State 1st loss, 30-20 | Sports News

CARSON, Calif. (AP) – Jake Haener had 306 yards and one touchdown, Jordan Mims rushed for a career-high 186 yards and two scores, and Fresno State hit San Diego State No.21 his first loss with a 30-20 victory on Saturday night.
The Bulldogs (7-2, 4-1 Mountain West) took a 20-0 lead in the second quarter as they earned their second victory against a ranked team this season. Fresno State totaled 485 yards of offense, ending San Diego State’s 29-game streak of containing opponents to less than 450 yards.
Haener completed 25 of 42 passes in his sixth 300-yard game this season. After Evan Williams knocked out Lucas Johnson and sent him back for 36 yards at San Diego State 31, Haener connected with Keric Wheatfall for a 16-yard touchdown just inside the left pylon 43 seconds into the start. of the second quarter to give the Bulldogs a 14-0 advantage.
Mims played his second straight 100-yard game and became the first running back this season to reach the milestone of the century against the Aztecs. The senior tallied for 97 yards in the first half, including 13 yards with 3:53 left in the first quarter to top off a 15-play, 86-yard run.
Mims also scored a 15-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to take Fresno State’s lead to 30-13.
San Diego State (7-1, 3-1) entered the game as the nation’s second in percentage defense in third down, fourth against run and fifth in total defense, but had struggling to keep up. Fresno State converted 9 of 18 third downs and only had three goals three times in 13 records.
Johnson had 280 total attacking yards. The senior quarterback was 14 of 31 for 220 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions as well as 60 rushing yards. Greg Bell, who entered the third game on West Mountain Rush, was limited to 63 yards on 15 carries.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 20-0 on a pair of field goals from Cesar Silva before the Aztecs rose on the board late in the second quarter on a 19-yard reception from Tyrell Shavers.
Silva kicked his third field goal with four minutes left in the third quarter to give Fresno State a 23-7 lead before San Diego State responded with a 3-yard touchdown from Bell. The 2-point conversion failed, leaving the Aztecs behind 23-13 before the final 15 minutes.
After Mims’ second touchdown, Will Haskell – who replaced Johnson – ran for 7 yards to bring the Aztecs back to under 10 points with 1:06 to go.
San Diego State cornerback Dallas Branch looked like he would intercept Haener’s long pass to Josh Kelly in the second quarter, but the Bulldogs second receiver managed to catch him at the last second and traveled 69 yards. It was Fresno State’s second longest game this season and it led to Silva’s first field goal.
Kelly finished with five receptions for 107 yards.
San Diego State’s four-week stint in the standings is expected to end with that loss. However, Fresno State could re-enter for the second time this season. The Bulldogs entered the Top 25 after beating No. 13 UCLA on September 19.
Fresno State: The Bulldogs have their way to win their fifth West Division title since 2013 and an appearance in the Mountain West Championship game.
San Diego State: The Aztecs have committed three turnovers after having had one or none in six straight games. The two interceptions and a fumble led to 15 points for Fresno State.
Fresno State: hosts Boise State next Saturday.
San Diego State: Play Hawaii next Saturday.
