Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal “furious” that Biden administrator blocks Americans in Afghanistan
Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal is “furious” at the Biden administration for delaying Americans and Afghan allies who are desperately trying to get out of Afghanistan.
Blumenthal (D-CT) specifically used the word “failed” when he referred to the fate that befell hundreds of people in the Taliban-controlled country, a term the administration has once contested with.
“I was deeply frustrated, even furious, at the delay and inaction of our government,” he said in a statement Monday.
“There will be plenty of time to hold account for the inexcusable red tape that has blocked so many of our Afghan allies,” Blumenthal continued.
“For now, my singular goal remains to get these planes off the ground and safely to our air base in Doha, where they have already been cleared to land.”

I expect the White House and the State Department to do everything in their power, absolutely everything, to make this happen. »Https://t.co/42LbVNyoKP

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX), the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, compared it to a hostage-taking over the weekend.
âIn fact, we have six planes at Mazar-i-Sharif airport, six planes, with American citizens on them as I speak, also with these interpreters, and the Taliban are holding them hostage for requests in this moment, “McCaul said in an interview. with Fox News.
As the Taliban consolidated their control in Afghanistan, Representative Michael McCaul accused the group of holding the Americans hostage.

McCaul said the planes had been grounded “for a few days”.
“We know it’s because the Taliban want something in return,” he added. “It’s really⦠turning into a hostage situation where they won’t allow American citizens to leave until they get full recognition from the United States of America.”

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby was rather dismissive last week when he raised the possibility of Americans being stranded in Afghanistan.
“We have Americans who find themselves stranded in countries all the time,” he shrugged in an interview with MSNBC.

Reports have surfaced that there could “easily” be more than a thousand California schoolchildren and their families still stranded in Afghanistan after being left behind by their government.
“There are easily a thousand more students – born in the United States or children of SIV – still trapped in Afghanistan,” Cajon Valley spokesman Howard Shen said on a Thursday … “
There is no metric on the planet that can consider this âevacuationâ a success. Take our people home.

The furious Blumenthal then called on the Biden administration to “do everything in its power” to bring home the Americans who have been left behind.
“It was American citizens and Afghans who risked everything for our country,” he said. “We cannot leave them behind.”
