COUNTY BOARD OVERRIDES 21 OF COUNTY EXECUTIVE’S 34 BUDGET VETOES
Even with property tax levy increase, average Milwaukee homeowner will pay $2.17 less
Milwaukee, WI – The Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors voted today to override 21 of the 34 budget vetoes handed down by County Executive Scott Walker earlier this week. The final 2010 Budget will raise the County’s property tax levy by 2.18%, the lowest increase in six years.
“Despite the hard work by our Finance & Audit Committee and other members of the County Board, I am not pleased with some of the actions taken today,” Board Chairman Lee Holloway said. “Not only are dozens of County employees losing their jobs, but the Youth Sports Authority program was also eliminated. This will affect the lives of hundreds – if not thousands – of kids in our community. This program keeps our children out of trouble for just $200,000 per year. This program pays for itself because it costs the County nearly $100,000 to send just two juveniles to state correctional facilities. The County will end up paying more in the long run because fewer of our youth will be involved in enriching competitive sports. For that, I am deeply disappointed that the Board could not override that particular veto.”
“I am also disappointed that a number of jobs are being outsourced to contractors likely to pay workers less and not provide health care coverage,” Chairman Holloway added. “This will be extremely damaging and contribute to the already negative conditions facing low-income and minority neighborhoods in the City of Milwaukee. Let the record reflect that Scott Walker, motivated by his campaign for Governor, is killing jobs and the quality of life in Milwaukee County.”
The 2010 Milwaukee County property tax levy will be $263,264,740, an increase of 2.18% over the 2009 levy of $257,687,150. Under this scenario, due to net new construction in Milwaukee County, the County portion of property taxes on a City of Milwaukee home worth $150,000 last year are estimated to decrease an average of $2.17 from 2009.

Interesting. Just a few observations here:
I see a lot of “Borkowski, Cesarz, De Bruin, Rice, Sanfelippo, Schmitt” in there for sustaining Walker’s vetoes.
My big surprise is DeBruin. I thought she was going to come back toward the center after having a challenge from the left last time. The thing that stands out this year is that CRG threatened to recall her if she didn’t go along with the Walker plan. Then again, they threatened Jursik and she didn’t sustain most of the vetoes.
There are some significant stories that these vetoes tell — too many for a quick comment.
De Bruin has never been one to stand up for the county, unless it came to county nurses.
But you are correct about the stories of who are friends of Milwaukee County and who are mere puppets of the special interests.
I’m grateful they restored the mental health services, but it is not a pleasant day for the 51 housekeepers who are losing their jobs at BHD.
Unfortunately, to the common lay person, they do not understand how the intricate workings of the mental health system works and how what may seem like easily replaced housekeeping staff will lead to higher costs and make the jobs of the mental health professionals all the more difficult.
