On Saturday evening, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was at the State Fair with some family members, enjoying the rare bit of personal time. On the way back to their car, they came across a scene of a young man threatening a woman and a small child.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Mayor Barrett put himself in harm’s way to come to their defense. In the ensuing altercation, Mayor Barrett suffered severe lacerations and broken teeth when the assailant used a metal object to repeatedly strike him with. Mayor Barrett also suffered a shattered hand from striking the assailant.
Fortunately, Barrett is already out of the hospital and on the mend. During the recovery process, it has been reported that the Mayor never stopped doing city business, receiving updates on MPS and other issues. It is also being reported that Mayor Barrett has also maintained a positive outlook and good spirits.
Milwaukee County First applauds Mayor Barrett for his selfless act of heroism and uncommon valor. Mayor Barrett has repeatedly shown in word and policy, and now in personal sacrifice, that he is a true leader, and that we are lucky to call him our own. We wish the Mayor a rapid and complete recovery from the injuries he suffered while coming to the aid of a fellow citizen.
